Two vacancies have arisen in the complement of registrars in Geriatrics and GIM. Both are initially based at Freeman hospital, which houses 6 elderly care wards - three acute, one orthopaedic rehab and two general rehabilitation, and the job plans will be reviewed in September, when the regional registrars rotate between centres. Older People's Medicine integrates with Stroke Medicine, which has its acute base at the RVI and a rehabilitation ward at the Campus for Ageing and Vitality (CAV; former NGH). There are day hospitals on two sites, two continuing care facilities based in nursing homes, one community rehabilitation unit run jointly with social services, and a new initiative to improve acute geriatrics at the RVI site, with two new consultants! . The internationally-recognised Falls and Syncope service is ! based at the RVI.
Job timetables include opportunities for training in the renowned Falls and Syncope unit - a world leader in research and service development in this field - and other specialist outpatient work. The postholders will take part in one of two on-call rotas - the RVI acute medical admissions rota or the Freeman Hospital (formerly Newcastle General, which houses the stroke rehab ward) cover rota.
The posts are not recognised for training, but there is a weekly departmental academic programme which the postholder will attend and educational supervision and on-the-job training will be equivalent to that of the existing registrars. The job timetable will include sessions for study and teaching, and it is expected that the postholder will undertake specific work and training in teaching medical students, under the guidance of Dr Richard Frearson, undergraduate sub-dean.
Applicants should be ready to act at medical registrar grade and as ! such should ideally have completed core medical training and hold full MRCP. Candidates who have not yet fully achieved this, but are working towards it, may be considered.
